The Paperboy (3.5)

(Trailer)

2012 Lee Daniels thriller about a journalist who returns to his home town to try to prove the innocence of a man on death row.

I will admit that this movie was not really my style. I found the first half pretty boring with hints of disgust and I wasn't as blown away by the cinematography as I knew I should've been. Just not my kind of thing I guess.

The script was a bit too all over the place for my liking. I loved the characters but I found that the way they were introduced and in what way a bit careless. I suppose that would once again be the style they were going for...

Zac Efron (Charlie St. Cloud) was good. I actually liked Nicole Kidman (Just Go With It) for most of it which is more than I can say for the majority of her films (especially recently). I've never really liked Matthew McConaughey (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past) but he seemed to suit this role really well.

I will never look at John Cusack (The Raven) the same way again. He completely blew everyone else out of the water in this beyond creepy role. He haunts my waking life...seriously. What the hell! Seeing this movie just to see him  is worth it. Or not worth it if you want to keep going on liking him.

The script was meh. The first bit was meh. The ending is not anything I was expecting and had be balled up in my seat with my hands over my mouth to stop from verbalizing my shock and repulsion. Insane.

Check it out if you watch the trailer and are even remotely interested as the ending is worth it. And John Cusack. And Zac Efron in not a lot of clothing.

Searching for Sugar Man (4)

(Trailer)

2012 documentary/biography by Malik Bendjelloul about the musician Rodriguez.

This is one of the most unbelievable stories ever told and is the man reason that everyone should watch this award winning documentary.

The movie starts a bit slow but it builds quickly and your interest is peaked from the very start all the way to the end (and after the movie when you start looking on Google and talking to other people about it).

That is also what's great about this movie - everyone who watches it has to talk about it and tells other people to watch it and so on and so forth just like the story (but I'll stop there so I don't give anything away).

I honestly don't know what else to say about it except that I think I would have found it even more amazing if I had grown up in South Africa and had heard of Rodriguez before. That was a big catch for me at first as I had never even heard of him so it took longer for me than usually to get into the documentary...once I did though, that was that.

Check it out. It is worth all of the hype.

She's the Man (3)

(Trailer)

2006 romcom by Andy Fickman starring Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum (The Vow, The Son of No One).

When Viola's twin brother ditches school to go to London Viola posses as him so she can play on his school's soccer team but things start to get a complicated.

I really did not think that I would like this movie. The trailer does not do it justice and I'm glad that someone convinced me to watch it. Not only is it actually hilarious but it's the first time EVER that I have liked Channing Tatum in a movie...which is weird. I'm not entirely sure why I liked him except that he fit the role really well. Amanda Bynes was hilarious as a dude but just didn't cut it for me when things go serious.

This movie starts out corny but gets hilarious and good and then totally plummets off the deep end into a pool of corny lameness that it doesn't recover from. The one liners at the end are actually painful. The bulk of the movie was entertaining though and not quite as unoriginal as I thought. Maybe I would've liked it more if I actually like soccer at all...

Check it out if you have a bad cold and want to watch something that you didn't have to pay too much attention to and could chuckle at now and again. Just talking from first person scenarios here.

Hotel Transylvania (4)

(Trailer)

2012 comedy/family/animation by Genndy Tartakovsky.

I. Laughed. My. Ass. Off.

I really did. So did the people who I was watching it with. Mind you, watching it on your own is probably not as fun, but all of us were in the mood for a fun family movie and that's exactly what we got.

First off, all of the voices were bang on. Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez and the rest of the cast all fit nicely. Second, the mix of humour, love and excitement was perfect. Third, while I didn't agree entirely with certain characters looks I thought that it gave a new look at old legends and I personally enjoyed the twist of monsters vs. humans.

The only thing I didn't like was the teenage love aspect. The whole "zing" thing was a bit lame and I didn't believe that those characters actually were in love...it was covered up by the funny bits.

I laughed a lot and was truly entertained. What else could you want?!

Igor (2)

(Trailer)

2008 animated family film by Anthony Leondis.

A hunchback who wants to be a famous scientist creates life to fulfill his dreams but what he creates is not exactly what he had in mind.

This movie was cute and the characters were weird in an original way. The story was full of moral fibre.

It was lacking convincing humour. It was lacking in excitement.

It looked cool. The voices matched the characters well enough. I liked the idea behind the story and look they were going for but it just didn't work. It was a bit boring to be honest.

That's about all I really have to say about it. Watch if you're looking for a movie that you may not feel obligated to finish. It was cute though, I'll give it that.

Bonus: Steve Buscemi and John Cusack as strange characters.
