Martha Marcy May Marlene (4)

(Trailer)

A damaged girl tries to reconnects with her sister after running away from an abusive cult.

This movie was on almost every must see movies of 2011 list. I can see why it was but I don't think it was on my top 10.

I agree that it was a knew take on a psychological thriller. I liked that it kept a steady pace as it slowly builds while the story reveals itself. I also know it worked as a thriller because I couldn't stop thinking about it once it was over and am still thinking about it. Not obsessively, but almost unconsciously.

While the movie had the perfect pace that helped keep the tone steady I felt like it at least had to end with a bang (literally). There were a few heightened scenes, and I respect the script for not having that one key climax, but that being said it still needed that push at the end that would stick with you.

Elizabeth Olsen was amazing. I'm not sure if I saw a physical change but she owned the emotional scenes...and really, there was nothing but emotional scenes.

Great drama. I liked the story. I can't think of any other movie that looks at cults/sects without turning it into a crazy horror or weird comedy. This one just told a realistic yet disturbing story that didn't seem far from the truth. That helped I seem a little more creepy...

Good performances and an interesting and character rich script made for an eye opening movie that stays with you. I just don't know if it was enough to stick with my for the long haul.

Worth the watch.

Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey (3)

(Trailer)

I wanted to see this for almost a year as it was one of the big documentaries that was all the buzz last year.

I liked the story and it was great to see the history and passion within this industry aka puppeteering, but it was just missing that woe factor. I want a documentary to convince me and while I thought his story was great I didn't find it overly inspiring.

It should've made me want to become a puppet master. When really, it made me realize that Kevin was made to be a puppet master. While this is okay as it was a movie about him it should've also been a movie about the love of this art form and I think they lost sight of this.

While it didst inspire me to make puppet it was interesting and taught me a few things I never knew before. While it didn't help me grasp the industry or the bigger picture it made me smile.

Wanted more but still a decent film with passion and humour and an overall good story.

The Devil Inside (2)

(Trailer)

A girls mom is sent to a mental institute in Rome after murdering several people during an attempted exorcism on her years before. Now the girl is older and wants to understand what happened and why.

As an actual fan of the paranormal I have read about exorcisms and the different signs/symptoms they were discussing in the film. While I thought it was cool that they included these I hated how they said them and then didn't explain them. They had so many little pieces of info that just need a tiny explanation to adds major depth to the story but instead they just said nothing

The young priest was annoying. What was even more annoying was that they gave you no information about him or any one character so there was zero attachment. That adds to the lack of explanation - the fact that each character had their own secrets that were mentioned but never revealed. Annoying.

While it was interesting for the most part it wasn't scary and since they didn't make up for that with having a crazy story with in-depth characters meant that the movie was kind of lame. I wish they had compressed the movie and added a whole second part to it where things "get real" as the kids say.

...and then it just ends. Literally. Nothing is revealed or resolved or anything. They hit the climax and 10 mins later the credits rolled. Choppy.

Ya. Good for a late night watch but I would suggest The Rite over this movie because at least Hopkins was interesting.

Vampire's Kiss (3)

(Trailer)

1988 comedy/fantasy movie starring Nicholas Cage about a man thinks he is turning into a vampire and his life falls apart.

What. The. Hell.

Seriously. This movie was one of the weirdest things I have ever seen and I have seen a lot of weird movies my time.

I cannot deny that Nick Cage ( Season of the Witch), though completely off the wall, had a wicked performance in this movie. His character was 3 sheets to the wind as my grandpa would say and he handled the emotional spirals so well. I mean, the end part when he completely loses it is some of the best acting...but its still so messed up.

I can't say I get the story...I won't ruin it but trying to figure it out here but it's whack. It's so whack that I honestly didnt like the first 40 mins or so of the movie until things start to get heavy and then I just accepted it and took it all in.

Totally weird story with weird characters but with strangely one of the best performances by Nick Cage made for an interesting watch...one I may not want to experience again.

The Pirates Band of Misfits (2)

(Trailer)

The Pirate Captain wants nothing more than to be pirate of the year but after he gives away his most prized possession for it he tries to right his wrongs.

I am a big fan of kids movies as the stories have to be interesting and well laid out and the humour is always good (especially when they slip in adult jokes for fun). I also like pirates so I assumed there was no way I was not going to love this movie.

I was sadly wrong.

It was cute and they did a decent job of trying to add in science into the whole story but the humour wasn't there and when it was it was too dull to warrant a laugh. I thought that the second part of the film was better with some giggles and cool scenes but was overall disappointed.

The pirates were cute and some were cool but like I said, I was looking for more likable characters and I just didn't get any.

Also, the main plot was kind of boring to me which made the whole.movie...bleh.

Maybe kids love it but I wasn't really impressed even after all the cool animation and jokes about ham day...it was lacking in the great department.

21 Jump Street (2)

(Trailer)

Two new cops are sent under cover as highschool students to find out who's behind a new drug ring.

Things I generally don't find funny: people doing drugs, people making fun of fat people/fat people, dick/fart/homosexual jokes, comedies where grown adults act like idiots...

What this movie was about: see above things I don't like.

It's almost not fair for me to even review this because even if it was a good movie (and lots of people thought it was funny) I would still not have liked it because I don't find any thing about it funny. I laughed a few times, one being when things wouldn't blow up when it should have. Another when there was a sentimental scene that I couldn't take seriously...

I did like Channing Tatum more than I usually do but that may be because nothing else was stimulating me. Jonah Hill is way better than this movie, especially after Moneyball. I really just want him to not making fun of his appearance and take his talent more seriously.

Ya. Bleh. I want my 2 hours back.

Bonus: Ice Cube

This Means War (3)

(Trailer)

When two CIA agents and best friend realize that they are falling for the same girl, they use their skills to try to win her over before the other one gets the girl.

I knew this movie wasn't going to wow me as the story really didn't interest me at all. Then when I saw that it starred Tom Hardy ( Tinker Tailor Solider Spy, Warrior ) and Chris Pine ( Unstoppable ), who aren't just talented but some good old fashioned eye candy, I just had to check it out.

Reese Witherspoon ( Water for Elephants )aside, the action actually want that bad. I found the characters rather annoying, most of all Witherspoon's, but was surprised by my lack of interest in any one character.

Some of the scenes were cool, mainly the one where they are both sneaking into her house without her noticing and it is one continuous shot for several well planned minutes. Rest of the action was unsuspenseful and obvious.

The ending was the least climatic part of this whole movie. Not only because you already know what's going to happen but because it only takes like 5 minutes to conclude. Lame.

Over all entertaining. Loved watching Hardy and Pine work together but the story had no depth, surprise or emotion and I found myself growing restless for it to be over. Even with some decent action and some well earned laughs, it left something to be desired.

The Intouchables (4.5)

(Trailer)

The 2011 french film by Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano based on a true story about a wealthy quadriplegic who hires a young man from the projects to be his caretaker.

François Cluzet and Omar Sy were amazing in this film. I mean, beyond amazing. They took hold of their characters to the point that I actually forgot that it wasn't a documentary where these were the actual people but very talented actors. Omar, who played Driss, was fantastic. His character had sucha  wide range of emotions with a deep and complex story backing up his decisions and I thought that Omar portrayed every characteristic with ease. François was just beyond words...playing a quadriplegic can not be easy and yet I had to go on imdb to see if he actually was acting or if he was in a wheel chair. Crazy.

The story is heart-felt, moving, inspirational and at the same time had a surprisingly comical background. I was laughing at a lot of the scenese and felt truly warmer in the heart region after the movie was over. It has been awhile, maybe since Beginners that I have seen such a solid drama about people that moved me in ways that makes me love cinema all over again.

Watch this.

There really isn't more I can say about it.

Only complaint: I watch a lot of foreign films and never mind subtitles (prefer it over dubs) but I found that during some fast paced scenes that I couldn't read fast enough and lost out on some ends of conversations. Only thing I disliked about this movie and it really has nothing to do with the film itself.

The Avengers (5)

(Trailer)

Wow.

Just...wow.

I know that there are a lot of action movies coming out this summer but I honestly don't know if they can top this. It sure raised the bar for action movies from here on in and for all the right reasons.

The cast was amazing. I thought that they all worked so well together. While I love Robert Downey in everything and Chris Evans was as charming as always, I  really found that it was Mark Ruffalo that I loved watching. He did a great job of re-birthing the Hulk and I am so so happy. Also, that man is sneaky funny which I also enjoyed. I was mostly suprised by how I didn't hate Scarlett Johansson at all...which is weird but a nice change. Chris Hemsworth was nice to look at and I think he has imporved since Thor. Jeremy Renner was meh but he handled the action really well.

I did not see this in 3D and I am glad that I didn't the first time around. I find that for super action flicks that a lot of the fast paced scenes are lost in a blur. I will see it in 3D the next time I see it for the extra wow factor, but this movie does not need it to pack a punch.

Best thing about this movie: it's goddamn hilarious. I knew there would be some Iron Man one liners and some hilarious name calling but I had NO idea that it was going to rock. I should have known as Joss Whedon is a pro at genre mashing and really nailed the action/comedy flow of this movie. So talented. So flawless. So...delicious?

I just...can't think of anything negetive to say. The movie is long but it didn't feel long. The story was well paced and well formed and the characters were as wonderful and enjoyable as ever. The action was not too much but with some nice flips, booms and bangs to stimulate the senses. There were some cool toys and even cooler (ya, cooler) fight scenes that made my nerdsenses tingle...and maybe a bit of drool too.

I could keep going and going but you get the point. SEE IT!

Hulk out.
